Witt made her breakthrough in 1982, when she finished second at her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Then, she was dominating the sport with her elegance and grace. Olympic triumph Katarina (now Witt) won the Women's Figure Skating Gold Medal during Sarajevo in the Sarajevo Winter Games. The following year she took home an even tighter contest. Actually, she didn't win the free-skating contest, but won gold based on performance during the mandatory figure and short programme. Witt was the only woman ever since Sonja Haenie to win an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt, who was a star in the film industry as an actor, returned to figure skating in 1994 to compete at Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Though she did not get a medal, she delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in the year 1995.
